On the D-Ring

05 May 2026

The D-ring that closes the Vault is the first article of the house's hardware language. It is cast solid, hand-finished, and designed to bear weight. It will reappear — at larger scale — on the Brutus Satchel.

The ring was not chosen for the Vault because it was available. It was designed for the Brutus Satchel, which is a larger, heavier object, and transplanted into the Vault at a smaller scale because it was exactly correct. A D-ring closure is a functional object — it holds the flap shut through geometry and tension, not through magnetism or hidden hardware. It works harder than it looks.

In burnished brass, the ring develops a warm patina over years of handling. In blackened steel, it holds its tone indefinitely and stays cold against the palm. Both are correct choices. The difference is a question of what you want the hardware to do over time: become something, or remain itself.

The ring carries a maker's mark on its interior face. BWA 316L on the steel. BWA on the brass. Small enough that you need to look for it.
